    Disposition/Asset Management

Asset Management is a broad term (umbrella) that gets adapted to many different scenarios and business sectors. In the IT Service arena, asset management refers to the handling of IT hardware and software through its life cycle.

When you purchase new hardware and software SMTII can help in managing (track) the hardware and software (IT Assets) through its useful life. We also create a technology refresh cycle that will refresh the hardware and software in a cost effective manner to maintain our client's technical edge.

As the technology (hardware) is refreshed, we will deactivate the old equipment; data wipe and sanitize the hard drives per DOD Standard 5220.22M for mandated regulatory compliance of data laws and client security purposes.

And for the technology that no longer meets your needs, we'll help uncover the value of this deactivated technology by evaluating its "remarketability".

Your equipment may still have value even though it is not fitting your IT needs. Generate additional funds for your IT budget. If there is a market for your IT equipment, SMTII will find it!

SMTI and Recycle America have partnered up to properly dispose of non-marketable equipment while following all EPA standards.

    Technology Refresh

(Upgrade Equipment) Organizations usually hold on to their existing PC clients (desktops and laptops) longer than they should for two reasons; money is scarce and the systems in place have been doing an adequate job.

However, and institution can only stretch the replacement cycle so far before it starts to cost itself money. Both in hard dollars and opportunity cost.

The reason to upgrade equipment falls into two categories: technological and business.

Turning over the desktops or laptops on a regular basis is the best practice. A reasonable rule of thumb is two to three years for laptops (portables) and three to four years for desktops. With this practice you are budgeting for a replacement of 25% to 33% of your units per year.

Smith Micro Technologies can recommend and manage the technology refresh process for your organization based on your specific needs and expectations. (top)

    Technological

As technology development moves forward, older desktops and laptops become more of a liability in terms of potential failure, security risks, and opportunity cost.

One of the most obvious costs to holding a desktop/laptop too long is the rise in failure rates after the 2nd year with a laptop and after the 3rd year with a desktop due to components reaching the end of their "design life"(period of time the manufacturer specifies that the component is designed to last.) (top)

    Business

Although productivity is more difficult to measure, the productivity increases gained by deploying new systems are actually quite substantial. The most ubiquitous measure of productivity gain is faster system performance with less time spent waiting for the processes to complete. (Top)
